John Sievert, lifelong area resident, dies

John Sievert, 89, who until his death Thursday was the oldest member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, was laid to rest in Chesterton cemetery Saturday.

Mr. Sievert died at his home, M.R. Box 19, at 1:35 a.m. Oct. 22, after an illness of seven days. He was born in Old Porter, July 10, 1870 the son of John and Mary (Wetzel) Sievert.

A lifelong area resident, he was retired from the old brickyards. His wife the former Anna S. Stephens survives. There were married Feb. 16, 1909 in Waverly, and celebrated their Golden Wedding at a big open house earlier this year.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters and three sons. Mrs. Hazel Mills, Adrian Mich.; Mrs. Ester Beck, Mrs. Irene Swoverland, Mrs. Frances Pliske, Arthur, Oliver and William Sievert, all of Chesterton.

Other survivors are 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and a brother, Lewis. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Theodore Turner.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s church, the Rev. H. J. Huebschmann officiating. The Carl Edmonds Funeral home was in charge. Pallbearers were William and Lester Sievert and Kenneth, Robert, Harrison and Marion Stephens.
