John Stephens Dies at Age 83

John A. Stephen, 83 of 122 Porter ave., died at 12:25 p.m., Friday, December 23 at Porter Memorial hospital, after a three week illness.

He was employed by U.S. Steel in Gary as a foreman in the blast furnace departmenta for 23 years, and operated a grocery store here from 1940 to 1951.

He was born in Chesterton Sept. 5, 1874, a son of Louisa and Joseph Stephens. He married Cora Morrical in Chesterton May 28, 1902.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Harrison and Marion, both of Chesterton; two brothers, Theodore of Chesterton, and George of Escondido, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. John Sievert, Chesterton; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday at the White funeral home, with the Rev. Clair Siple of the First Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Chesterton cemetery.

Pallbearers were Donald Slont, Thomas Brooks Jr., L.F. Kelly, Silver Witte, William Thompson, and Edward McGroarty.
