Former teacher James Strange dies in California

Former Chesterton High School teacher James Richard Strange, 60, of Oakland, Cal., died Thursday, March 5, 1998 at the Summit Medical Center in Oakland.

Strange retired in 1996 after 30 years at CHS.

He was born in Chesterton on June 25, 1937, the son of Warner Gene and Margaret Peg (Simms) Strange. Both preceded him in death.

He graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor of science degree in 1960, and received his master's in education from Texas A&M University in 1965.

He completed additional continuing education courses in science at the University of California at Berkeley.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; sons Geno (wife Emily) Strange of Arlington, Texas, Jay Strange of Albequerque, N.M.; daughters Shaun (husband Richard) Beecher of Mooresville, Ind., Peggy (Charles) Thomas of Valparaiso and Colleen Strange of Palo Alto, Cal.; and grandchildren Richie, Shana and Ryan Beecher of Mooresville, Ind. And Julian and Patrick Strange of Arlington, Texas.

Strange was preceded in death by a daughter Sherry and a sister Patricia Harvil.

A memorial service is planned of 4 p.m. on Friday at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway in Chesterton. Remains are to be cremated.

A visitation with the family is planned from 3 p.m. until the time of service on Friday.

The family suggests memorials to Chesterton High School in care of the Jim Strange Library Fund, 651 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton, IN 46304
