Five In Death Record of Past Week

Mrs. Augusta C. Stephens

Mrs. Augusta C. Dettman Stephens was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 5, 1865 and departed this life at her home in Chesterton on Sept. 5, 1929 following a lingering illness of several years, her age being 64 years and 4 months.

On April 27, 1884, she was united in marriage to Joseph A. Stephens who survives her.

There were seven children born to this union, three passing away in infancy and Bertha, dying in early childhood. Arthur of Gary, who met with a serious accident some weeks ago and is now in the hospital in Gary, was not able to attend the funeral. Joseph B. of Harvey, Ill and Irma who has constantly attended her mother during her sickness, together with the husband and father, Joseph A. remain to suffer their loss. Besides she leaves two sisters, Miss Bertha Dettman and Mrs. Minnie Bradley, both of Chesterton. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dettman, who lived her a number of years.

Mrs. Stephens was a member of the German Lutheran church, having been confirmed in her early girlhood. She was a member to the Klan, the W.C.T.U. and the Eastern Stars.

She was interested in the temperance movement from the very first and was one among the most active W.C.T.U workers.

Her work was the work of the common wife and mother. She belonged to the old school of mothers. She spent her life in maintaining the home—her supreme interest was in her children. Her work is finished, her tasks are all done and she has gone to her reward while "Her children rise up and call her blessed."

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, with family chapel service at 2:00 and 3 o’clock in the First M.E. church with Rev. A. E. Bagby officiating assisted by Rev. Kochermann of South Bend, O.E. 8 officiating at the grave. Burial was in Chesterton cemetery.

The following served as pallbearers: Ralph Peterson of Gary; Supt. C. E. Vanes of Danville, Ill; C. H. Keeler, Rudolph Jannach, Monroe Rauder and Hayes Fisher, all of Chesterton
