Arthur L. Stephens
Arthur L. Stephens, son of Joseph Stephens of Chesterton, was found dead Monday morning about 9:30 o’clock by Russell McConnell, with whom he lived at Gary. The body was resting on the wheel of his automobile, which was in the closed garage.
Mr. Stephens had been despondent since the death of his wife last July. He left note asking that his body be cremated and the ashes sprinkled over his wife’s grave in a Hammond cemetery. He visited Chesterton last Friday and seemed in good spirits.
Arthur L. Stephens was born in Chicago on Oct. 11, 1889. He graduated from the Gary Business college. At the start of the world war he enlisted in the engineering corps and saw active service in France throughout the war. While in training camp in 1917 he married Marie Cammerman of Hammond, who died on July 20, 1932. There were no children.
Surviving are the father, Joseph Stephens; a sister, Miss Irma Stephens of Bloomington, Ill., and a brother, Joseph Stephens of Harvey, Ill., besides a number of relatives here.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from Anderson’s chapel, 5th avenue, Gary. His body will be cremated in compliance with his last request.
